Favorite Moments and Popular Posts

I would like to thank all the new followers and readers here on Bird Lady Blog.  The Grow Your Blog party was a great way to make new friends, follow some new blogs, and get some new followers.  I'm really excited to have over 20 new followers in just a few days time and looking forward to getting to know you all better.

Due to a dead car battery, and frigid cold weather, I haven't been out birding much at all this last week, or this New Year for that matter.  So I thought perhaps I would share with you some of my favorite or most popular posts here on the Bird Lady Blog.

One of my recent great birding moments was seeing the Snowy Owl after getting a tip from my favorite news gal Shelley Monahan at KHQ6 News.  Searching for Snowy describes my adventures to see the beautiful owl, whom I have since then learned is named Henrietta.
Henrietta, the Snowy Owl

My most popular post, and I'm not sure exactly why, is Little Hawks and Birding Trails. Perhaps it's because I talk about the Great Washington State Birding Trails and the search engines pick it up?  Not sure, but it has the most views of any post here on Bird Lady Blog, but not a single comment, that wasn't spam.  It does have some cute pics of an American Kestrel with a rodent, and the sweet Great Horned Owls I saw at one of the birding trails.

This last fall I had one of the closest encounters (aside from holding the hummingbirds) that I have had with one of my most favorite birds, the Pileated Woodpecker.  This is the bird that got me interested in bird watching, and has always fascinated me.  The Best of Birding Adventures shares my excitement as I get within a couple of feet of this magnificent bird with my iPhone.

Another popular post has been the post about the Tree Swallows, Tiny Egg Shell.  This picture of a baby Tree Swallow was published by Birds and Blooms magazine.

A great memory of mine was when an otter came to visit the resident Great Blue Heron when we had a fish pen at the neighbors dock for the winter.  Visitors at the Fishpen Buffet has a great video of the two snacking on fish together within a couple feet of each other.

Another great video of the Great Blue Heron hanging at the fish pen in a major snowstorm is in Rain or Shine, Sleet or Snow.
I hope you enjoyed a look back through some of my favorite birding moments and most popular posts here on Bird Lady Blog.  I can't wait for the weather to improve so I can get out to those birding trails, or even just out in the neighborhood would be nice.  It's supposed to get down to 12 degrees Fahrenheit tonight and only got up to about 22 degrees today.   That's just a tad too cold for this chick-a-dee!

  1. Nice post Sherrie. I do wish we would get out of this frigid weather. It has been 0 to low teens here. I'm still visiting blogs on GYB. Lots of nice ones out there.

  3. Cool!! Found you on the Grow Your Blog party. Love your photos! We had woodpeckers pecking on our dying tree last year ... but we had to have the tree taken down because it was going to become dangerous to home and people. I loved the woodpeckers ... hubby hated them. LOL

    1. Hi Hilary! The GYB party has been great!

We have a dying tree too, I call it my bird tree and will NOT let my husband touch it. He would've gotten rid of it a long time ago. But it is the only tree with branches lower down for my birds to perch on and it is right off my balcony so many great photo opportunities.

Woodpeckers are cool birds, but they can be a bit destructive and a tad noisy with all their drumming!

  6. Beautiful bird pictures Sherrie. I love all of the "Winged" and not far from where I live, we have lots of Eagles who nest. Haven't seen too many snowy owls though. Hope you will drop by and say hello!

    1. Hi Carole, thanks for stopping by Bird Lady Blog. We have an Osprey nest very near our home so I know how cool it is watching the big raptors nesting. Our Osprey chase off any Eagles that come near our bay.

  7. Hi, Sherrie. Thanks so much for visiting and for commenting on my chickadee china. I now know why you liked them! Being such an avid birdwatcher, do you know about Boehm china and his masterpieces of animals and birds especially? I think you'd be interested in that, if you haven't read about him. I love birds too, but I haven't gotten to the stage of birdwatching. I just enjoy them in our yard. I wish i had the energy to go out in the cold and keep the feeder full, but... Thanks for following; I'm following you back, and have added you to my sidebar. ~Zuni

    1. I loved the chickadee china! You set a beautiful table, and I'll enjoy following your blog. I googled Boehm china and you know I think I might own a bluebird sculpture of his. It was a gift from a dear friend years ago. I'm not sure what ever happened to it, when we moved full time to the lake cabin, it just didn't 'go' with the new lake decor.

I need to get my rear in gear and get some suet as my daily visitors have eaten it all gone in one of the suet cages and almost all gone in the other. I would so miss them birds if I let it go empty even one day!

  9. Thanks so much for stopping by! And congratulations on your Big Year...much success! As I write, my finches and the canary are taking baths and the dog is in the middle ground (floor) between them. Smart dog, one who does not like b-a-t-h-s. We're so accustomed to just spelling the word as he recognizes it readily. I'm looking forward to getting to know you and hearing about your year as soon as you warm up a bit. Thanks again!

    1. Well thank you Christina! Owls are so cool! I love the one on your blog header and enjoyed your creative blog.

I hear ya about the cats. I have one, Stanley Oliver, and he is forever trying to 'bird'. Right now he is begging to go outside because he sees my chickadees and nuthatches out there feeding. I hate it when he actually gets one :(

  13. Wow! A snowy owl is a sighting to be treasured! I also love the Great Blue Herons, growing up near the ocean they will always remind me of my childhood. This winter's so cold I've been mostly viewing my own birdfeeder, full of my favourite black capped chickadees, and the recent attraction of some gorgeous cedar wax wings!
    Thanks for stopping my blog!

    1. The Snowy Owl sighting is one of my all time favs! I am still going back trying to find her, but haven't been so lucky. Waxwings are always exciting to see. I've only had a couple of sightings, and one was a dead one on the road :( I've also been enjoying the black-capped Chickadees too, such cute little birdies.

  14. Hi Sherrie, thanks for visiting me. I love birds too. Oh my gosh, the other day I found a great blue heron feather. I think I’m in love with great blue heron feathers. I’m over here in Vancouver BC at the moment but I also live in Oxfordshire UK for part of the year where we have the best bird song. You’ve never heard the dawn chorus like in the UK! Spectacular! Anyway, I’ve followed now so can see you more often. And very soon I’ll have a painting finished. It’s on an old map and features a barn owl, a British robin, some magpies and various plants from my home in the UK. I’ll let you know when I have it up on the site. See you soon. :)
